Oman- In Oman’s water sector, Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) has secured a significant contract worth RO 125 million (about $325 million) for constructing the Ghubrah 3 desalination plant. Set to become the largest desalination facility in Oman, this project will significantly enhance the nation’s water security and infrastructure sustainability.
The Ghubrah 3 desalination plant, which will begin operations in the first quarter of 2027, is designed to produce 300,000 cubic meters of potable water daily. The facility spans an impressive 70.4 thousand square meters and includes a 45,000 cubic meter potable water reservoir, highlighting the project’s scale and ambition. Utilizing advanced Reverse Osmosis technology, the plant underscores Oman’s commitment to sustainable water management, aligning with the national objectives outlined in Vision Oman 2040.
Eng Abdulaziz bin Said al Shidhani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nama PWP, emphasized the strategic importance of this project. “The Ghubrah 3 desalination plant exemplifies our dedication to ensuring a sustainable and reliable water supply for our communities,” he stated. “By leveraging the latest technologies and fostering collaboration with industry leaders, we are poised to achieve new milestones in water production and energy efficiency.”
The project will be carried out by the Capital Desalination Company, a consortium that includes GS Inima, Jemaih Energy, and Sogex Company. This collaboration brings together extensive expertise and experience in water purification and desalination technologies. Marta Verde, Chairperson of the Capital Desalination Company and CEO of GS Inima, expressed enthusiasm for the project’s potential. “Our consortium is dedicated to delivering efficient, sustainable solutions that will bolster water security and promote environmental stewardship,” remarked Verde.
Dr. Suhaib Abudayyeh, CEO of Sogex Oman, highlighted the transformative impact of the Ghubrah 3 plant on Oman’s water security and sustainability efforts. “This project represents a testament to the successful collaboration between public and private sectors in driving innovation and addressing critical water challenges,” noted Dr. Abudayyeh.
Nama PWP, Oman’s sole buyer of output from power generation and water desalination projects, continues to play a pivotal role in the nation’s transition towards renewable energy and carbon neutrality.
