South Africa has announced a major cooperation with Google to expand artificial intelligence training and digital education across public institutions. The agreement, forms a Google South Africa PPP Partnership, that will support students, teachers, and technical staff through modern training programmes and updated technology tools. The Department of Higher Education and Training confirmed that the MoU signing ceremony will take place at Google’s Johannesburg office, where officials, students, and technology experts will attend the event. Authorities believe that cooperation with global technology companies will help the country respond to fast changes in the labour market. Studies from international organisations show that more than 50 percent of future jobs will require digital skills, while many education systems still depend on outdated methods. Because of this gap, governments now rely on partnerships with private companies to modernise training and improve employability. The new programme will provide about 5,000 Google Career Certificate scholarships in fields such as AI Essentials, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, and IT Support. These courses will target students, lecturers, and IT staff working in public universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges, and Community Education and Training centres. The government plans to give priority to rural and township institutions so that digital learning reaches communities with limited access to technology. Teachers will also receive training through specialised courses such as Generative AI for Educators. This training will help them introduce modern tools in classrooms and improve teaching quality.
