Abu Dhabi- The recent opening of three state-of-the-art schools in Abu Dhabi’s Zayed City represents a landmark achievement in the UAE’s education sector. Managed by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), and facilitated through a consortium led by Plenary Group and BESIX Group, this project marks the first application of the public-private partnership (PPP) model in UAE educational infrastructure. The initiative will provide high-quality educational facilities for 5,360 students from kindergarten through Grade 12, starting with the 2024-2025 academic year.

Completed within the designated timeframe and budget, the Zayed City Schools project has set a new benchmark for educational facilities in the region. Covering a total area of 81,000 square meters, the schools are designed according to stringent Estidama sustainability standards—a hallmark of Abu Dhabi’s green building initiatives. The innovative designs feature advanced technologies and dynamic educational spaces, reflecting the successful integration of private sector expertise in design, construction, and financing under the PPP framework.

This milestone was celebrated by high-ranking officials, including His Excellency Mubarak Hamad Al Mheiri, Undersecretary at ADEK, and His Excellency Badr Al-Olama, Director General at ADIO, alongside senior representatives from the BESIX-Plenary consortium. Their combined efforts have been instrumental in bringing this transformative educational project to fruition.

The Zayed City Schools project is emblematic of ADIO’s strategic approach to enhancing Abu Dhabi’s infrastructure through public-private partnerships, demonstrating the potential for such collaborations to enrich the emirate’s educational landscape while creating substantial investment opportunities. ADEK played a crucial role in ensuring the schools adhered to the highest standards of design and material quality, reaffirming its commitment to providing world-class educational environments.

The involvement of BESIX, a company with a significant footprint in the Middle East since 1966, and Plenary Group, a global leader in PPP projects, was vital to the project’s success. Their extensive experience underscores the potential of private sector engagement in driving public infrastructure development.

Moving forward, ADIO is set to expand its PPP initiatives, leveraging the success of the Zayed City Schools to explore new opportunities, such as the development of student housing in partnership with top-tier institutions like Khalifa University. This initiative serves as a model for future projects, highlighting the transformative impact of private sector participation in public infrastructure development.
